Training the Next Generation of Marine Scientists.
Australia’s marine estate is the third largest globally. With two thirds of Australia underwater, encompassing 14 million square kilometres, we are truly a marine nation.
Capstan is a national post-graduate at sea training initiative on CSIRO’s Marine National Facility research vessel RV Investigator.
RGC were commissioned by Macquarie University to create a new brand identity for this national initiative that would raise awareness and attract funding from Marine Science Industries, Universities, Government and Tourism. We created a stylised logo of a starfish to symbolise the marine science students and then overlaid two starfish to create an image of an old fashioned capstan. A nautical colour scheme further enhanced the underwater research and on-board training the students would experience at sea.
Capstan is governed by a network of leading Australian industry and university partners from within marine science and geoscience, it is a first of its kind programme that transforms the way marine science education is delivered.
The first of three pilot voyages crosses the Great Australian Bight in November 2017 with 30 post-graduate students and trainers.
